677 Squadron AAC Takes to the Skies!

String, thermals and a healthy respect for parachutes!

Personnel from 677 Squadron recently took a break from their normal duties on the ground to take to the skies at Wattisham Airfield, joining the Army Gliding Club for a day of flying.

For several members of the Squadron, this was their first experience of gliding and provided an opportunity to see Wattisham Flying Station from a unique perspective. Following an introduction to the aircraft and some basic flying instruction, personnel were soon strapped in and ready for launch.

The first challenge was getting airborne. Unlike the aircraft most military personnel are accustomed to, the glider has no engine and relies on a winch attached to a piece of string to launch it into the air. Despite this basic-looking arrangement, it proved
remarkably effective, and soon everyone was enjoying the experience.

Once airborne, some personnel were fortunate enough to encounter thermals. For those experiencing it for the first time, silently climbing through the air using
nothing more than rising warm air was an impressive experience.
The presence of a parachute also provided some welcome reassurance. Whether it was genuinely required or simply provided a degree of psychological comfort while being launched skywards by a winch and a piece of string is open to debate!

The day provided an excellent opportunity for personnel to experience gliding and develop an appreciation of the skills involved in soaring flight, while also providing a welcome change from the usual Squadron routine. 677 Squadron would like to extend its thanks to WO2 E and the Secretary of the Army Gliding Club, for organising the day. As well as the instructors for flying and providing their insight and experience.
A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all, with personnel returning to terra firma having gained a new appreciation for the skill of gliding — and perhaps a healthy respect for winches, thermals, and parachutes.

“Gliding teaches a simple truth: with the right knowledge, discipline, and determination,
even the unseen forces around you can carry you to extraordinary heights.”
